Job description

CORE PURPOSE 

To safeguard the academic integrity and quality of MANCOSA's assessment processes through the independent moderation of assessment instruments and marked student scripts, ensuring that assessments are fair, valid, reliable, appropriately pitched and aligned to programme learning outcomes, applicable NQF level descriptors and institutional quality standards.

CORE FUNCTIONS

 

  • Moderate assessment bundles, including question papers, marking memoranda and rubrics, in accordance with institutional policies and prescribed timelines.
  • Evaluate assessments for validity, fairness, academic rigour, content alignment and appropriateness to the relevant NQF level.
  • Review and approve assessment instruments or recommend revisions to enhance quality and alignment with learning outcomes.
  • Moderate samples of marked student scripts to verify the consistency, fairness and accuracy of marking practices.
  • Confirm that approved memoranda and rubrics have been applied appropriately across the student cohort.
  • Recommend mark adjustments where warranted in accordance with institutional policies and governance requirements.
  • Prepare and submit comprehensive moderation reports, highlighting findings, recommendations and identified areas for improvement.
  • Participate in Marker Check Meetings and other quality assurance activities where required.
  • Maintain independence, confidentiality and compliance with institutional policies, assessment procedures and POPIA requirements.

Minimum requirements

QUALIFICATION(S)

·        A formal qualification at least one NQF level higher than the programme being moderated.

·        Professional registration with a recognised professional body (where applicable) will be advantageous.

 

EXPERIENCE

·        Minimum of two (2) years' experience in a Higher Education academic role.

·        Minimum of two (2) years' experience in examining and/or moderating assessments within Higher Education.

·        Demonstrated experience in assessment quality assurance and moderation processes.

·        Experience within online and distance higher education environments will be advantageous.

 

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

·        Excellent assessment design and evaluation skills

·        Strong understanding of SAQA, NQF and Higher Education quality assurance requirements.

·        Excellent analytical, evaluative and report-writing skills.

·        Strong attention to detail and sound academic judgement.

·        Ability to work independently and maintain objectivity.

·        Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

·        Proficiency in online assessment and learning management systems.

  

ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS:

·        Recognised expertise in the relevant discipline or field of study.

·        Evidence of scholarly activity, research output or professional contribution.

·        Ability to maintain complete independence and impartiality in moderation decisions.

·        No actual or perceived conflict of interest with MANCOSA or allocated modules.

·        Moderators may not concurrently undertake examining, marking, facilitation or supervisory duties for the same module.

·        Willingness to participate in annual training, orientation and quality assurance initiatives.
