Introduction

ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT MANAGER: UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES - DURBAN CORE PURPOSE To provide leadership, coordinate and take responsibility for the development of undergraduate assessments within MANCOSA’s Assessments Department, including assessment governance structures, the alignment and coordination of assessment activities, and ensure that the academic quality, integrity and authenticity of assessments is maintained at all times across the institution and across platforms. In addition, the role will be responsible for managing personnel, as well as the day-to-day operational functioning of the department.
Job description

1.Assessment Development and Quality

  • Coordinate and provide leadership for the undergraduate assessment development function at MANCOSA
  • Oversee, develop and maintain MANCOSA’s assessment governance structures, and ensure these structures are actively utilized for decision-making and continuous improvement of the assessment function
  • Ensure assessment processes (including development, moderation, marking, etc.) are reliable, valid, transparent and underpinned by robust quality assurance mechanisms
  • Ensure appropriate structures are in place to assure, monitor and report on the integrity, confidentiality and security of assessment processes
  • Develop appropriate internal assessment monitoring and quality assurance mechanisms for online assessments and digital assessment processes
  • Monitor and manage mechanisms for the collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting of assessment development data
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including Programme Delivery, Curriculum Development and Programme Quality Management, to ensure the successful, coordinated and integrated development of assessments in line with the broader MANCOSA Academic function.
  • Implement key strategic objectives related to the assessment space.
 
2.People Management

  • Manage and oversee day-to-day staff activities, duties and relations.
  • Instill academic values, ethics and industry best practices to develop staff for advancement.
  • Monitor staff performance in relation to efficiency, quality and conduct, and implement support, training or remediative measures where necessary.
  • Oversee, analyse and report on staff and departmental performance data analytics.
  • Formally mentor and coach members of the team with respect to academic quality, assessment pedagogy and theory, interpersonal conduct, and operational efficiency.
  • Facilitate organic growth of all employees within the department by use of on the job coaching initiatives and ongoing quality analysis of staff work.
  • Ensure communication on the Staff Code of Conduct, KPI’s and Job Descriptions by ensuring Signed Copies are regularly checked.
  • Provide Assessment Induction and regular training on system usage and pedagogical best practice to both internal and external academic staff. 

3.Compliance and Quality

  • Adhere to and manage assessment compliance in line with the provisions of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
  • Contribute to regulatory, accreditation and professional body applications, submissions, site visits, etc.
  • Maintain the Integrity of MANCOSA’s Assessment and Institutional Rules and Policies.
  • Ensure all relevant assessment data as pertains to regulatory compliance and quality is captured and reported to the relevant governance structures.
  • Ensure Health and Safety of departmental employees whilst abiding by regulations by ensuring there is an appointed Health and Safety Representative.


Minimum requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree 
  • Doctoral Qualification advantageous
 
EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a management role in a higher education tertiary institution,
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with and coordinating the assessments function.
  • Experience in online assessment coordination and the management of academic integrity and quality for online assessment.
 
RELATED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge and a clear understanding of policies, procedures and rules that govern the Higher Education environment.
  • Ability to manage academic quality in higher education and assessments
  • Must have a sound understanding of different assessment pedagogies and theories prevalent in contemporary higher education
  • Personnel management skills
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Be familiar with distance and online education delivery methodologies and pedagogies
  • Must be able to speak confidently and demonstrate professionalism

Additional Requirements

  • Will be required to work overtime and during the weekends
